Mych :: Teaching This Technique In March

January 19, 2010 | • Workshop GOYA Misc. Photos

Did some testing with Mych (pronounced Mike) this week.  He has an amazing range of emotions.

Shot with a silver 86″ para on the cyc wall.  I’ll be teaching this technique at Gulf Photo Plus in Dubai at the beginning of March and again at Photoshop World in Orlando at the end of March.

Cheers, Zack

How do you like that para? I bought it and sent it back within about 20 minutes, because the diffuser falls off if you try to have the umbrella vertical or pointed down.

  • Nick Collins said on January 19, 2010

    To Eric:

Don’t use the diffuser. The light coming from that giant PLM is so soft and beautiful on its own.

  • Will said on January 19, 2010

    Quite cool Mr. Arias!

  • zack said on January 19, 2010

I haven’t tried it yet with the diffuser. I kinda like what it’s doing without it. I do plan on trying it next week though.

  • Eric Doggett said on January 19, 2010

Well dang – maybe I will have to give it another try. I was sad to send it back.

Photographs like this make me want to quit wedding photography. The clients have changed too much and we no longer share the same passion for photography. Good, clean portraits like this one are re-igniting my passion for the Art. The silver-tonality in this photograph is phenomenal Zack.

Good god this is amazing… Must. Make. More. Work!

  • hemlock said on January 20, 2010

Damn thats sweet… wish I could make it to the Dubai workshop, when are you coming back to Australia?

  • Jeff Flindt said on January 20, 2010

Inspired!!!! Wouldn’t you call it “Photochopped” world? =)

    Dear Zack Arias,

great to see you are blogging again! Keep the posts going.

    btw. Great light as always!

gonna go ahead and assume that you’re the reason these things are back ordered.

    bad zack.

    go to your room.

  • Joe said on January 20, 2010

Love this and i’ve been stoked at the more frequent blog posts… you’re one of the people i most enjoy seeing pop up in my rss reader in the morning.

  • Frank T said on January 20, 2010

I’m curious as to which monobloc you used with this image (mainly because of your prior posting about exploring these).

  • Steve B. said on January 20, 2010

    That’s kind of a tease. :)

  • Troy B said on January 20, 2010

I am going to that class at Photoshop World…couldn’t be more excited. It’s my first trip to PSW.

  • Doug Robertson said on January 20, 2010

    I love this.

  • Squeeker said on January 21, 2010

I hope to take your class when you get to Orlando! Tryin’ to earn my monies so that I can go….

Besides taking classes, I wanna buy you a beer for critiquing my site a while back (and immensely helping me with that)! Newcastle, right?! I know a place in town that just opened up called “The House of Beer” lol

Strikingly powerful image with perfect tones. Has me reaching to my wallet to see if there are a few extra bucks in there that I forgot so I can go to Dubai. :)

  • alex said on January 21, 2010

are you gonna start giving the blogg some fuel soon, or just talk about what you are gonna do for money?

I miss the old zack who gave the bloog alot of wisdom, and dident just talk about i gonna teach here and there.( a clone of kelby ??))

  • zack said on January 23, 2010

Alex – Where else do I announce where I’m teaching? Also, you’ll notice that I haven’t so much as announced my own workshop dates on this blog. Post for post I try to share more than advertise. I would say my ratio is 10:1 on that front.

Also, as far as this post goes, I have a post about this technique already…

Clone of Kelby? Who else shares more knowledge and wisdom than him? His blog is filled with free resources. He devotes a ton of time to it. He also teaches and that is his platform to let folks know where he will be but it isn’t just a blog about him making money is it?

Love reading you stuff. If you have it (gear) it’s cause it’s a necessity, and not some frilly, ubercostly, yuppy, latest & greatest thing. Paul Buff (per DH) “best value in lights, but you’ll never hear users talk about the quality”

  • Spencer said on January 22, 2010

I’ve been thinking about getting this para for shoot-through, and I think you just pushed me over the edge.

Great image too, it reminds me of an older one of yours I saw when I took your One Light workshop, the one with just the faint ghosting of a face in blackness. Really cool.

Hope I can make it to your class at PSW.

  • guphotography said on January 22, 2010

Zack, how did you manage to concentrate the light so narrow around subject? Given the light is coming from a para …

Or was that achieved in post?

  • zack said on January 23, 2010

I had the para really really really close to Mych and he was at least 12 or 15 feet away from the back wall. See this for reference…

  • Joshua said on January 23, 2010

Just got my $20 studio yesterday, and I love it! Tried getting some CYC images, but ended up going in a different [and totally awesome] direction! White seamless has so many possibilities….

  • Les Doerfler said on January 23, 2010

Zack…some people would complain about the St Bernard that reached them after the avalanche because the scotch wasn’t aged 12 years.

Just keep doing that voodoo that you do so well. I hope you teach this technique at OneLight this summer.

    Yer pal,

  • Sunith said on January 23, 2010

Love the intensity and tonality of the portrait. Congrats on your GPP “on location” workshop being sold out. That was fast! and just shows how popular you are across the world. Hope to see you in March.

  • Mike Kang said on January 30, 2010
