Teaching w/ Joe McNally :: Hong Kong & Malaysia :: This July

May 23, 2012 | • Workshop

Dork and Numnuts in one place? It’s a duo so unbearable we had to ship it overseas to avoid riots. :)

Seriously. I’m going to Asia with Joe McNally. No pressure. No pressure. No pressure. Seriously? I don’t believe this either but it’s true. It’s such an honor. Like bowing my head low and walking out of the room backwards while mumbling “I’m not worthy” kind of an honor. Louis Pang is bringing both of us in for Creative Asia where we will be speaking, judging, and hanging out at this amazing conference. We then head to Malaysia where we will each be teaching a three day intensive workshop.

Of all the people I know in this industry no one does it better than Joe McNally. No one. He teaches. He shoots. He helps. He gets published. He’s been doing it since I took my first steps. He’s seen it all. He’s lost it all. He’s rebuilt it. He’s a “personality” in this industry but not one of the overnight flame outs. He’s the real deal. No one can refute that. Thanks Joe and Louis.

Dates ::

Hong Kong :: July 16-20 :: Creative Asia Conference (speaking, judging, hanging out)

Kuala Lumpur :: July 24 – 26 :: Three day advanced workshop

Kuala Lumpur :: July 29th :: OneLight vs. ManyLights

Get all the information about it here. Hope to see y’all there! Can. Not. Wait.

Congrats buddy! That’s so cool! You’ll kill it.

  • Mike said on May 23, 2012

Joe is great and all, but does he have a “system” to sell me? If he can’t help me get rich by prayin’ and sprayin’, then what use is he to me? :-P

In all seriousness, I’d KILL to be in HK for this; my favourite city and two of my favourite photographers.

  • Manny said on May 23, 2012

Awesome!!! This needs to be on video…

  • Leif Hurst said on May 23, 2012

    That image is genius!

Glad to see the one light workshop getting some global exposure. It’s simple, clean, and easy to get started with while getting some insane results. Much deserved!

How about a “One Light” tattoo across the belly a la “Thug Life”? Too much?

  • Bob K said on May 23, 2012

Would be impolite to say one is a better teacher than the other, but you’re definitely in Joe’s league.

Having said that… I’ve sucked in just about everything you & Joe have put online the last couple of years, and… okay, I know how to use lights. Nowadays I get more out of SHOOTING, following your progress as a photographer, and reading/listening to your commentary. So I probably won’t spring for any workshops (budget forbids, anyway), but I do hope you keep the blog posts and personal narrative flowing.

  • Laura Jane said on May 23, 2012

Wow, this is fantastic, I only wish I were closer because I would so love to be there! Just wanted to tell you how thrilled I am for all that you’re doing, I love your work.

  • Garry Byles said on May 23, 2012

So near and yet so far… I’m flying into Hong Kong on 26th!
Saw Joe when he came to London last year but would have been great to see the two of you battling it out :)

  • Keri said on May 23, 2012

I second the comment about this needing to be on video :)

If you guys fancy doing a repeat workshop, please pick the UK, i would love to take this workshop !

  • Assaf de Courcy said on May 23, 2012

I live in Hong Kong and am so excited. Signed up for the conference straight away even though the day before I get back from London.

  • Scott said on May 23, 2012

Congratulations! I think this officially means: “You da man!”, but you don’t need me to tell you that. You’ve done very well Sir! ;)

  • Simon Fleming said on May 24, 2012

    Hey Zak.

Everything you said about Joe is absolutely spot on – having just spent four days with him down in Tasmania, Australia, I can honestly say that my photographic skills have gone up a few notches but more importantly I am a better person for just having had the privilege to spend some time with the great man.

Having said that, you’re a pretty awesome dude yourself mate, and I would love to have the opportunity to meet you too someday.

  • Simon Fleming said on May 24, 2012

Apologies on the name typo Zack… just call me the dork.

  • Sree said on May 24, 2012

Wow! I wish I was more super advanced with lighting (and personal finance :) ) to avail myself of this amazing opportunity. Please do get it recorded professionally and sell the DVD!

  • Chris Blizzard said on May 24, 2012

I’m agreeing with everyone else. This would be an awesome one to be at. Not just because of you, not just because of McNally, but because the different approaches, and because you’re BOTH great teachers.

I’d also say it will be worth filming and putting on DVD… I’m sure you’d make a few sales ;)

  • Laurian said on May 24, 2012

Who gave McNally the double chin!? Shame!

    …says he took it himself…

  • Michael Broughton said on June 1, 2012

Well, we may never completely settle the one-versus-many-light debate, save that I know whose lighting kit I’d want to be carrying on that trip!

  • Krysalis Photography said on June 2, 2012

Why is it that every cool workshop seems to be so far away? Well, at least to me. :) You guys need to come to Europe more often, preferably Sweden. I would show you the sites.
