I can’t tell you how overwhelming this past weekend has been for me on all fronts. Hundreds and hundreds of man and woman hours went in to pulling this three day live event off. It was frantic. It was stressful. It was exhausting. It was one of the greatest things I’ve ever been a part of. Thank you one and all. Here are a few selects from the weekend.

Interested in seeing the 16 hours of studio training? Check it out here.

The shot above and the shot below were using the same background.

There are some other images on this blog post from the weekend.

Many thanks to ::

The MAC Group

And the entire crew who made this thing happen.

And you know what? I would not be able to do this had Marc Climie not put a camera back in my hands 6.5 years ago.

We have more material, videos, and stuff coming to the blog from this event.

Cheers, Zack

You are completely incredible for what you do, and I find inspiration in your life story. Whenever I think I’ve hit the bottom, I remember that you’ve been there, and have gone onto soar. Thanks again Zack!

Thanks Zack for all that you did this weekend. It was awesome and you explained everything very well. I’ve been working with alienbees for a year now and I currently have 3 umbrellas and a beauty dish and just ordered a photek softlighter. I am missing a few things to begin setup on my garage studio but what you did this weekend inspires me and motivates me to get this started. I never thought you could do so much with white seamless especially with minimal equipment. From the bottom of my photographers heart, Thank you.

Zack: I know how much this stuff can take it out of you. In my real job I did two large learning exhibitions for internet enthusiasts, three years apart in 2001 and 2004. The second was much bigger than first and I did it nr London when I lived 500 miles away in Glasgow. Months or prep, three days of great, great fun. The day after I collapsed crying, completely overwhelmed at what I, my wife, my friends in my industry had achieved. I needed a weeks to recover.

You guys need to just chill now and take it in. I saw a few hours each day of the rebroadcast and have paid for the download. What I saw was extremely interesting and motivational. You and your whole team rock. Congratulations for a great weekend from “the internets”

Zack, I hope you know how much we all appreciate what you did for so many people this weekend. It was a tremendous class that you taught, and I spent the entire morning today testing some of the techniques you taught. All I can say is thanks, and I can’t wait to catch another of your classes, be it creativeLive or your OneLight Workshop. Thanks again.

  • Mark said on June 14, 2010

I’ve said it before, and I’m saying it again, these 3 days (for free) have been more informative, useful and fun than 2 years at university. If only I had this when I started I could spent my £6k tuition fees on more modifiers!

Thanks to all involved, you guys are the best.

This course was, with lack of a better word, incredible! I watched nearly all of it live, I purchased the course and most importantly, I was inspired.

These last few months I have really been just kind of treading water with my photography. I have not been very excited about it, been working long hours in my day job and just overall feeling photography may just have to go away for me. After watching this course and absorbing a lot of the information you taught, I have a renewed vigor to photograph again!

Thank you so much Zack for doing what you do…

  • Sree said on June 14, 2010

Absolutely epic weekend. Without a doubt one of the best photography experiences I had. Ever. Learned a lot, laughed a lot (slept way too little). Well worth it. Thanks again. You are one amazing dude. :) That shot of the fish tank came out really well. You are a true legend. I think anybody/everybody who tuned in the past 3 days saw what it takes to pull things off and how a pro handles things (and multiple things at times). Awesome, awesome and awesome again. Really glad that I tuned in over the weekend.

    Hi Zack,
I’m still high from the weekend: there was so much good stuff presented in a very clear, simple, funny and interesting way.
I am a photographer and even though I was pretty sure I knew my basics, being able to see you at work made me reconsider many things.
You made me eager for going out and shootshootshoot and I needed this.
I’ll rewatch the whole thing a gazillion times. :)

Until last friday i didn’t feel comfortable at all and know how to use a simple flash, i just avoided it.

  • Christina Novak said on June 14, 2010

Thanks so much Zack! I’ve been stuffing my brain for the last 3 years with everything related to lighting and picking up pieces here and there. I just needed somebody to bring it all together for me in a logical way. And I”m hugely visual so being able to watch the process happen from start to finish was SO helpful. I finally feel like I understand it! Thank you so much!

  • Neil Robinson said on June 14, 2010

All the photos are amazing, but the girl in the tank is my favourite.

A big thank you to all involved

  • James R. Doe said on June 14, 2010

You rule Zack. I only caught the first few hours because I’m building a house but I bought it and will watch it in the next few days. Your studio space discussion was quite appropriate though not mixing home with work is an important consideration.

You’re a great speaker because you don’t have that overconfidence that creates an urgent stressful environment. You are very calm and honest and it’s actually quite a soothing learning experience.

  • Joe said on June 14, 2010

First of all thank you so much for doing this. Saturday night I was supposed to go shoot a few bands at a local studio, but it fell through. I was pretty bummed because it would have been my first time shooting musicians and I was excited about it. The universe had other plans for me, as it turns out.

Upon visiting Strobist that evening for some light entertainment (ha-haa!), I found a link to your workshop. I spent the remainder of the night-and a good portion of Sunday-glued to the computer.

I truly appreciate you broadcasting the workshop online for those of us starting out who don’t have the money to buy the download. You answered so many questions that I’ve been thinking about lately, and provided a ton of much needed inspiration. Thank you again from a grateful new fan, and congrats on an amazing weekend!

  • gmb said on June 14, 2010

Fantastic stuff Zack. I caught the majority of it live and will eventually catch up on the download (shame it took me until today to decide that; I also need to pony up for Bert Stephani’s Motivational Light videos, come to think of it…).

But take it from me (all of us, in fact): you’ve inspired a great many people this weekend. Wednesday morning I’m heading down to my local musician’s Co-operative and putting up some ads

Zack, thanks so much for the weekend. Can’t tell you how much I got from it. I have been studying studio flash for years and “got” some things this weekend that no one else has been able to explain with the simple clarity you did. Thanks man. You ROCK!

  • Blips said on June 14, 2010

The show is over. Zack did a great job. I liked the way he was explaining everything he did, starting with the simple basic understanding of exposure and ending making great shots using every light-modifier available, even using gels and combining flash with studio-strobes. He explained everything in his own unique way, down to earth and honest, not sparing any brand-name about lack of options, features or pricing. Even now to buy the recording for the price of $129 its a steal of a deal, you get 3 days of workshop that would have cost you about $1600 to attend in person.

Thanks Zack it was a pleasure to watch and I learned a lot again.

It didn’t matter if it was for free, $79, $129 or $10,000 you have the same level of professionalism and demonstrated a true love for our craft, and that my friend you will never have to measure with a light meter, it’s just there rock solid. cheers- derek

Karma, and all that… Oh, and right now, money goes to gas, then gear, then food…

You teamed up with some first class folks over at creativeLIVE, and delivered big time. Thanks to the 11teenth power my friend!

Wonderful weekend Zack and glad I prepurchased the course.

Quick geeky Q for you…camera profile related question. I know you’re using lightroom to process your images, certainly at the start of the workflow, but what profiles are you using in your Canon’s and for more interestingly, your Nikons? Perhaps a better question should be, are you trying to get LR to mimic one of the in camera picture controls and if so which one?
    Thanks once more.

It’s been an incredible weekend, and yet more the time to come when I re-watch the videos from the sessions. I couldn’t think of a better spent money than that I used to buy the classroom videos.

Thank you very much Zack and thank you too to Chase Jarvis and all the people that made it possible.

Watched it all live – will watch the HD downloads during my morning workouts. Loved seeing you interact with the models. And I’m going to start carrying a flash meter in case I need a few minutes to think…priceless.

Thanks for a great workshop, I was able to see most of it (from the Netherlands) and it has inspired me to do (more) studio photography, and I learned some new stuff too, I was especially amazed by the “proper contrast/loss of contrast” part.

  • Cory said on June 14, 2010

Zack – Thank you for such an informative weekend. I was locked away in my computer room for most of it. For those of us not lucky enough to have a mentor on hand, you’re the next best thing!

Wow, i was hoping you would post some of the photos you took from Saturday! You’re work is so amazing and i was glad to be able to watch you do it live! I have to say my favourite shot is the one with your male model framed to the right in front of the wood paneling and the fact that it was a quick snap amazes me.

Zack & supporting cast of many,

What an amazing weekend you guys put together. I’ve seen many photographers produce great work, i’ve seen many presenters explain stuff, but this weekend I sat and watched as you setup and took great pictures, explained what you were doing and why, and even directed the team to the right cameras, screens, feeds – all at the same time.

What’s more I learnt a whole lot, and was able to go out between the Saturday and Sunday sessions to use some of the great info on a shoot of my own, and you know what? Everything I could remember from the seminars worked in my shoot.

    Thanks so much.

Zack, thanks! Educational, entertaining and creatively stimulating. I’m not a pro, will probably never be one, but learned a lot that I will put to use as I chase my family around with my camera and lights. My wife was a bit freaked out by the whole thing however. I heard “Is that guy STILL on? That’s creepy.” every time she came into the room.

I loved the whole creative live session, it’s been the best couch potato/seminar weekend i ever had… come to think of it, it’s the first one hehe, surely not the last, i live creative live and your work!

i had a quetion.. i remembered you took a picture of the x-rite color checker and you were going to tell us how to use it… maybe i went to the can at that time, but i never saw you working your magic with it, could you please tell us how to use it someday? i know you’ve had a lot on your plate recentyl and i don’t want to sound pushy or anything, jsut something i wondered. thank you for all the knowledge you gave us!

    You absolutely rock!

  • TonyJ said on June 14, 2010

Bless you, man! My wonderful family let me watch this the entire weekend…I only missed the tail end of Saturday because I had to run and do a photoshoot.

The absolute best part was seeing how nervous you were before the first live shoot, and then hearing your pre-flight checklist which included a period of “oh crap” freak out. It was the best because it showed just how integral the fear factor is in this work. It demonstated how high the bar is you set for yourself, and hopefully inspired the rest of us to raise our own bars. And it helped make me feel a little better about freaking out before each of my own jobs. I think if we’re not freaking out at least a little before a job, we just don’t have our hearts into it.

Nest best bits: 2. your philosophy tossed in here and there 3. watching you work your subjects and 4. your demonstration of how important it is to keep your wife happy. Believe me, after spending the weekend in front of the computer, I’ve got lots of making up to do!

    cheers and thanks!

Now…how can I see the pix you made of my sweetie/girlfriend/partner/’wife’? And super thanks for the live mention–my site crashed at 50,000 hits.

The shoot in the tank was genius- I was surprised Chase hadn’t thought about it before, maybe he was worried about his fish! Zack, this was a true win win gig for you and for us. Meghan has a talent for words, songs, music, and also an awesome set stylist and art director. Can I borrow her sometimes? Oh heck, can I borrow the 2 of you? :-) I need to learn the south accent!

    Zack –

Thank you to you and all of your crew, family & support staff. It was a fabulous weekend and I was so happy that creativeLIVE showed it a second time so I didn’t have to get up at 1am :)

You put out a phenomenal amount of excellent information, now to find time to get my act together and use it!

  • andy said on June 14, 2010

This weekend was simply incredible! I had high expectations from knowing how great of an educator Zack is, but my expectations were FAR short of the mark of what was received. I have never learned so much in such a short period of time.

Congrats, Zack! You hit some serious homeruns and helped a lot of people that simply can’t afford your courses in person, myself included. You brought WAY more to the table than you were expected to, as always!

I would recommend that even if you saw the whole thing live, go and buy it! One you will have that wealth of information on tap when you need a refresher, and two it will put fuel in the tank of the machine that is creativeLIVE. The concept and execution of CreativeLIVE is amazing so if you are able to let’s support these guys and this endeavor.

As a photographer/ teacher I respect what you did this weekend, physically and emotionally. You poured it all out Zack. I really feel . . . encouraged. You have an inspirational attitude towards photography, the business and yourself. Would love to meet sometime. Keep at it.

Thanks to you and CreativeLive. I didn’t get to tune in for all of it but wow! I learned so much. 1 thing I did from advice you gave on your FIRST night, was to take some shots, load them on my computer, put the card back in the camera and compare the way it looks on my LCD vs. my monitor. That was some great advice! LCD was much brighter! Great help to save time on post-processing! Of course that was JUST from the 1st night!
And I was thrilled to have you answer my question which was a bonus for me!
Thanks! Your charm comes in your ability to connect with those of us who have one thing in common and that is to develop and improve our craft (and for many, livelihood!). Thanks for your generosity and time and kudos to CreativeLive….What a coup! I am appreciative beyond words.

Also, i have to mention it was really nice to finally hear someone talking about giving back to others. it’s inspiring to say the least. I have to admit though i’m pretty sad that it’s all over. i could only image how much work went into it… but only hope you find it in yourself to do it again.

    Hey Zack!

I have to say that I had a great time this weekend and loved every second of it. The headache I had at the end of day 3 was nothing to laugh at.It was pleasant headache though cause I got me some learnin’ done!

The wealth of information you provided over the weekend has easily leveled my knowledge and understanding of lighting to a whole nother level. I highly valued your personal experiences as well as the life lessons you dropped on us. I can gladly and easily say that you are truly good people as if I personally knew you.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I sincerely appreciate the time and effort that you, your family and the creativeLive crew put into the badassery that went on this weekend. I am forever changed. I owe you a 6-pack of NewCastle if i’m ever in the ATL. :)

I suggest that everyone purchase the class if you havent all ready done so because you’ll be missing out on A LOT. Stop reading my comment and GOYA. Go to the creativeLive website and pick up this class now! You will not be sorry. They are practically giving the class away for free.

I just wanted to thank you with all my heart for this workshop. It was really, really awesome and met – or better said, succeeded – my expectations. I’ve always admired your work and I’m a huge fan of yours… and you’re a great teacher as well! I watched the whole classes live nonstop and there was never a moment when I went “oops, what is he trying to say here?” And keep in mind that it’s a Brazilian speaking here ; )
When the workshop was over, all I could think is that I didn’t want to go to my usual routine again… I currently go to med school, which I find really interesting, but I’m very in love with photography and can’t decide at all which path I should pursue. I’m sticking to this just because of the stability it can offer me. But seeing you work with such enthusiasm is really, really inspiring.
I just can’t thank you and Creative Live enough for this opportunity. And I still hope that you still plan on coming to Brazil one day!
    Kindest regards,

I watched every second of all three days while I was editing my own photos. Awesome.

Now I want to throw the living room furniture out in the back yard and build a Cyc wall.

The Redneck set was worth the effort, Meg. My favorite shot.

THANK YOU and your crew!! You have inspired me!

I am so amazed at the amount of info you shared this past weekend. I really appreciate that. I had planned on buying the 28″ Apollo sometime soon…I already have “Big Mamma”, but want something smaller to take outdoors. I paid for the download of your workshop instead…even though I caught most of it as it was being filmed. I do not regret my decision one bit. Thank you again for pouring your heart into this. You were such a great teacher and so very down to earth. I really did enjoy all of it and it gives me hope to know that even Zack Arias still gets nervous before every shoot :) Oh and tell Meg that her music is a beautiful gift.

  • Carlo said on June 14, 2010

I have to say waking up at 3AM for 3 days was all worth it!! I cannot thank you enough for sharing your knowledge and experience. To cover such broad topics as well in 3 days was monumental. My thanks also goes to the creativelive team and chase jarvis for making this all possible. Forking out 1000s of dollars for this kind of seminar is just out of most newbie budgets. I learnt so much and you helped me put a lot of things together to make so much more sense. Thanks again!!

  • Jon said on June 14, 2010

Zack, it was a pleasure flying along with you via the web, it did however mean my wife turned into a ‘photog widow’ for 3 days as I stayed up till 4ish in the morning {UK time}, but worth every minute, can’t wait to implement some of the techniques I learnt, hope I can nail ’em!! ;^)

  • Adi Ulici said on June 14, 2010

Zack- I popped in and out during your 3 day, and from what I saw you did a fantastic job laying down a foundation for the target audience. We need more respected photogs to step up and offer this type of instruction.

    Way to set an example!

Zack, its official, my wife hates you (only joking) but I spent hours watching. I took a lot in and bought the downloads. But the most important thing I took away from it all was insperation. I have a fire in my belly to go and shoot. Renting a studio this weekend just to get to grips with some of the stuff.
    Thanks for some wonderful teaching.

You said that you could do a workshop only about business, i think that would be fantastic. Would love to hear something about that.

Zack, I nearly missed this. I saw the build up, assumed US timezone wouldn’t work for me and thought no more. I was surfing and trying to avoid the World Cup when I spotted it was running at that moment. From Saturday through Monday lunchtime I was pretty much glued to my computer. It was awesome watching you – and seeing the contrast between how you kept up the patter and the proxy-students were less comfortable with that. So many useful tips. You are as we say here, “a gentleman and a scholar.” Oh and not having heard “oat-soda” before you have added a new term to my lexicon! Thank you SO much and thanks to all at CreativeLive and everyone else that made it happen. Fantastic.

  • Daf said on June 15, 2010

Thanks for those, and thanks for the class.
Sure someone else has asked his but I’m not going to read 213 thankyou posts! – it would be great to see the photos of all the light modifiers – even the rough pre-post ones.
Been curious about beautydish vs softbox for a while now and not been able to see like for like comparisons.

Zack, Thank you, you always make sense with your photography “speak”. Tried to catch every moment I could, even got up at 2am to catch rerun. You hit just the right note, keeping it interesting for those that do this and helping those that are just starting out. For me it was a very inspirational, fun, exciting thing to watch. You are the first person to explain the whole lighting scene as more than just “adjust your lights”. Your images were beautiful too, as always. Thanks to everyone involved and your wife can sing!

Your generosity and humility are inspiring! Thank you for all of the encouragement woven throughout. “Start Somewhere” is my new favorite mantra. Blessings to you for all you share and put out there!

    Overall great class Zack,

Thanks for your energy in the class.
What I took away from it was to really test my equipment. I own and rent most of the modifiers you were playing with but the trick with 7foot octa and the hard light with a grid was a eye opener. I will be trying that out but I dont want to pick up semi tires on the side of the road I.E (copy you). I watched all day sunday and the only thing I would have liked to see was the interaction between you and the studio photographers. I would have liked to see you making a longer, more in depth interaction with the photographers helping them with there mistakes. Thanks for sharing your wisdom. Wes Drelleshak

I know it was a lot of work for you and the others but I’m sure you just propelled the art of photography forward a year or so for many many people.

Zack, I really learned a lot from you this weekend and even though I watched almost everything in its entirety, I still ordered the download, so I could refer back to it again and again. You do a wonderful job explaining things and when you said in one of the video that a lot of “training” out there is just a lot of sugar, you are so right and that is never the case with you. It kills me that I am here in Atlanta and cannot attend one of your one light training sessions, due to the cost is out of my budget. Hopefully one day when I can afford to attend one of your training sessions, you will not be so big and famous that you have moved on to other things. I hope you never view the type of training you offer as a “wedding” and want to move away from it. You have been blessed with a wonderful talent and gift. Thank you so much for sharing your gift with the “internet”. I want to keep up with what you are involved with, so accept my Facebook friend request from four months ago!!!!!

this technical stuff is just a bonus for me after you changing my view on photography and giving me a perspective on how i am doing in comparison to others and how others struggle in comparison to me.

such anchor-points in life are so valuable and equally seldom that i will be thankfull my whole life for you sharing your wisdom and experience with me.

i tend to say: everybody is their own most important person. we only see the evil that befalls us and us alone. everyone else is doing better than we are.

my overall impression of you is:
this man speaks the truth. i like to hear the truth especially when i dont want to hear it. you speak your mind. that takes gutts, a healthy death wish and many disappointments which leave you with a strength that nietzsche would have killed for. you remind me of rocky balboa and his simple fighting style – keep on your feet no matter what your opponent may throw at you (the opponent here being life).

i hope to hear you teach more often in the future

And by “light” I mean make it look like the cigarette is lit and burning, so it seems she’s actually smoking it?

  • Meryl said on June 15, 2010

My family is not speaking to me because I watched the workshop during my son’s birthday party, but that’s ok because I learned so much.

Thank you for sharing, I have looked for this kind of information & had been unable to get it without taking a college course or a workshop a long ways from Rural OKLAHOMA! I know I well be watching the series over again several times! Thank you very MUCH!

    Zack —

A great big *THANKS* for all that you do, and for the generous way you share.

There are others who might have also given a fine workshop on lighting. What makes you special is the way you spread the love, spread generously and with abandon, but also with care and consideration for the craft. It came through, loud and clear, miles across the way, as I sat and watched affixed.

So yes, I bought the course and I will watch and re-watch.

Sincere thanks and hats off to you, my friend. Awesome work.

Hi Zack, CreativeLive, family and crew! I belive all 274 bloggers have all hit the nail on the head but I belived Jo-Anne Kyle summed it up best; you ARE a gifted individual and a wonderful instructor. It is also clear to see that you and everyone else who make this happen including your son, are wonderful people to make this happen for free and to make the focus on how to do it all with a budget and financial control is a very caring thing from extremely kind and wonderful people! Thank you all very much! I could not get all the show; trouble with the time zone. I subscribed the last day and had a family situation preventing from getting catching it on time but I will be purchasing the DVD. I wish I could have purchase it sooner but it does not matter. I will save my money and purchase it anyway! It is soooo well worth it. You guy really keep it real and don’t make it all about the money. You sincerely care about helping other photogs. If I could do more to express my sincere thanks I honestly would. So, if ever you are in the New Hampshire area and need an assistant, model or anything else. Look me up. I’ll be there!

    Thank again!

Zack, I just started using a light meter and it has helped my exposures stay a lot more consistent. I wish I knew how to use the cameras meter to get great exposures every time. I seem to over expose or drastically underexpose even when reading the histogram, which seems unreliable to me. What are your thoughts on light meters? Use them or don’t and why? I am able to take one meter reading instead of taking 2-3 test shots and it seems quicker, but is also less convenient in some ways. Please let me know if I am “cheating” myself in your opinion and why. Thanks, Chris

  • Linda Abbott said on June 15, 2010

There is no way I could adequately express my thanks for what you did for me this weekend. You are an awesome and incredibly giving teacher. Thanks for assuming I didn’t know anything about the subject and starting from square one (mainly, because I didn’t know anything about the subject and needed to start at square one) Thank you for making me use the manual setting on my Nikon and showing me how to do it (I’ve always been afraid of it because I didn’t know what I was I know enough to practice until I get good at it. Bye Bye Auto!) Thank you for teaching me how to get what I need without going banksrupt. And the demonstration where you had a model sit for the same photo while all the modifiers were used was the most incredible education on modifiers that I could have ever gotten. Again, I can not adequately say thank you for all of it.

I thought the Live link was excellent. The interactive nature meant that the content was much more dynamic and informative.

I can appreciate that this approach will completely depend on the ability of instructor. Zack is a huge influence on my work. ( I like how he starts off – if you have a studio – party in it every friday!! ok maybe I’ve taken that a bit out of context (;-) )

This is a great success I felt. I missed 1 day of it so the follow up downloads were essential.

I live in the UK. Thanks very much to all for arranging this.

    Hello Zack,
I don’t know if you will even see my comment but still I thought I’d give it a try.

I was wondering, has there been no post-prod on those pictures posted above? No sharpening, nothing?

  • zack said on June 16, 2010

Saibot – Minimal post production on these. I had to work on this blog post before scooting off to the airport. For the most of these images they are right out of camera. I do sharpen .3 pix at 80-90% when I downsize to 72dpi for the web.

ETA:: I worked on the image of Natasha in the fish tank. I had to remove the top of the tank and I added a few extra bubbles.

Thanks a LOT! for the master class 😀
I’ve been folowing it live from Spain (9hours difference), it was hard but was amazing!, i enjoyed a lot and didn’t miss anything.
Specially interesting how you were working with the subjects (models, clients, …) that is one of my many weakness. About the ligthing … what can i say … thanks a lot.
Btw, about the redneck ballerina pic, don’t you think is a lot of ligth (blue gelled) on her legs?, maybe the TV efect could be better with a “grid” on the flash shooting against the white papers on the screen?. And not sure if it’s a bruise in her rigth leg or dust in the sensor; sorry sometimes i’m kindda picky with that.

Oh!, and thatks a lot to all the people made the workshop possible, you are amazing guys!!

Hi Zack – I just wanted to say thanks for all the hard work you and your team (and Chase Jarvis, CreativeLive, etc.) put in to make this workshop happen. It was jam packed with information and fun too. I never thought I’d spend 10 hours on a Saturday sitting in front of the computer. Well done!

P.S. If you ever do portfolio reviews, I’d love to hear what you have to say about my work.

  • Senor D said on June 16, 2010

Hey Zack, would it be possible for you to work together with the Creative LIVE folks and put the picture packages with all the different modifiers etc on their site in a zip file? Or basically just anywhere where it won’t eventually be buried under newer stuff in your blog.

Also, thanks for the weekend. I’m at a spot where I know a lot of the ‘why’ and mechanics of lighting after reading a lot of Strobist, watching One Light, and reading Light Science and Magic, but your DVD and this class has been one of the only resources to actually demonstrate the how to such an extent. Also picked up a lot of tips that I have NEVER seen ANYWHERE (flash dumping).

  • D'Arcy Kerrigan said on June 16, 2010

Zack you are the bomb. What an extraordinary teacher you, thank you for a fabulous 3 days of incredible, useful information. I wanted to know about lighting and you made that happen. I wanted to say I just finished watching this past weekend’s workshop. As usual, you ROCK!!! The scenes of everything going on around you while shooting “The Fences” was a classic. I’ve experienced that a few times and to me that was true realism in shooting. Thanks to you and the entire crew for such a great presentation. I own the “One Light” DVD and this is a great supplement to it. Who says the big boys only shoot in NY, LA and MIAMI! The ATL hangs tough … and with “One Light”!

  • Harry Davis said on June 16, 2010

Any comments on the use of a light meter as a crutch from my post above? Sorry to bring back the past, but I would really appreciate some input from you Zack… Thanks, CHRIS

  • zack said on June 16, 2010

    Chris… you wrote…

If you are using your handheld meter as an incident meter remember that it is acting completely different than the meter inside of your camera.

Your camera meter is reading reflected light and trying to make it 18% grey.

An incident meter is measuring the light falling on your subject.

So if you point your camera meter at something that is white it wants to make it 18% grey. If you point the camera meter at something black… guess what? It wants to make the black 18% grey. So what percentage of grey is caucasian skin? Or a green shirt? Or the light blue part of the sky?

There is the issue with reflected light meters. You have to be smarter than your meter and this usually takes time. The nice thing about using a reflected meter is you don’t have to take a reading from where your subject is standing. You just point your lens that way and read the light reflecting off of them/it.

Incident meters read the light FALLING on the subject. It is just reading the quantity of light and it isn’t trying to make it 18% grey. The problem is you have to take your reading from the subject’s position so that sometimes requires walking back and forth or having an assistant do it for you.

At the end of the day I trust incident readings ONCE I’ve calibrated the meter to my cameras and lenses. Once I know my meter I just pop off a reading and off I go… well, unless I’m using Alien bees then I take 3 or so readings to see how consistent my flash is feeling that day.

Using a meter isn’t a crutch. I’ll talk a bit more about it when I do the post on color management because great color management depends first on great exposures.

    Dear Zack,
I was unable to afford your workshop, but I recently learned that my mother had sent you a thoughtful letter on my behalf to try and win me a spot at your OneLight workshop. I am so touched! Well, we didn’t win the workshop – or any swag – but I feel like a winner after watching your CreativeLive event last weekend. You have been a motivation for me to get out there and face my flash, which previously intimidated the heck out of me, and to pick up some Wescott softboxes. I even took advantage of the discounted CreativeLive offer so I can the watch your workshop again and again. I took advantage of the live chat room during the event so I kind of feel like I was there (your moderators and other chatters were so friendly and helpful).
One day soon I hope to meet you in person.
In the meantime, please tell me…who makes your utility cart? I searched the Grainger website but could not find a cart like yours. I dig those pneumatic wheels, electrical hookups, and places to stash equipment and A clamps.
